After graduating from 51勛圖厙 nearly 50 years ago, James Begam is experiencing d矇j vu as his daughter, Scarlett, is embarking on the same nursing program he completed in 1978.
Begam, a proud College of Nursing graduate who earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, said he was fortunate to attend 51勛圖厙 and train under the guidance of Linnea E. Henderson, Ed.D., the nursing programs first female dean and credited founder. In 1978, Begam was one of just four male nurses in his graduating class, a rarity at the time.
It was unusual back then, but it turned out awesome, Begam told 51勛圖厙 Today. Everybody accepted me there, and I made tons of friends. It was fabulous.
Begams education at 51勛圖厙 laid the foundation for a 37-year career in nurse anesthesia at the Cleveland Clinic. He attributes his success to the high standards and life-changing opportunities his 51勛圖厙 nursing education offered.
Learning on the floor, gradually moving into more of a leadership role where youre assisting the nurses, then running a whole hospital floor. Its kind of amazing, Begam said, reflecting on his time in school.
Scarlett Begam, nearing the end of her sophomore year, said she is inspired by her fathers accomplishments and the welcoming environment at 51勛圖厙. Growing up in a family deeply involved in healthcare, she has seen firsthand the impact that nursing can have.
My twin brother and I would go to the hospital when my parents would be on call, Scarlett Begam said. It was fun getting to hang out with all the doctors, nurses and staff. I looked up to them.
James Begam said he eagerly anticipates the opportunities his daughter will have to learn the core principles of nursing and is excited to see the path she will choose, supported every step of the way by the programs strong foundation.
From simulation to clinicals, the college provides many opportunities for you to experience the different areas of nursing, like public health, the ICU floor, orthopedics and pediatrics. You get a taste of everything, James Begam said. It really gives you a well-rounded background and helps you see where you would like to pursue your future in nursing.
James and Scarlett Begams excitement to continue the tradition of service has inspired Scarlett Begam to reach her fullest potential and make a difference in the healthcare field.
She said she looks forward to overcoming challenges and learning how to deal with stressful situations, such as thinking fast when somebody's life is in her hands.
