Video: 2016 Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration at 51³Ô¹ÏÍø

51³Ô¹ÏÍø held its 14th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration on Jan. 28 in the Kent Student Center Ballroom. The keynote speaker for the event was Joy-Ann Reid, national correspondent for MSNBC. The commemorative event also recognized the 2016 recipients of 51³Ô¹Ï꿉۪s Diversity Trailblazer Award, which honors diversity pioneers associated with 51³Ô¹ÏÍø, and Unity Award for Diversity, which recognizes the contributions of any 51³Ô¹ÏÍø unit that demonstrates significant contributions in the areas of diversity, equity, and/or inclusion.

The 51³Ô¹ÏÍø Board of Trustees today established a comprehensive, national search to recruit and select the university’s 13th president.

 

The events of May 4, 1970, placed 51³Ô¹ÏÍø in an international spotlight after a student protest against the Vietnam War and the presence of the Ohio National Guard ended in tragedy with four students losing their lives and nine others being wounded. From a perspective of nearly 50 years, 51³Ô¹ÏÍø remembers the tragedy and leads a contemporary discussion and understanding of how the community, nation and world can benefit from understanding the profound impact of the event.
